چکیده

Building an up-do-date information technology (IT) infrastructure is one of the key issues in supporting both the technological and the economical advancement of developing countries. Several concepts promise to meet the special requirements arising, when applying them to the telecommunication infrastructure of these countries. With its ability to be applied to an existing copper-based public switched telephone network (PSTN), the integrated services digital network (ISDN) [1] could be a model which evolves into a state-of-the-art communication technology without high investments. This paper presents a concept for a low cost local area network(LAN) and wide area network(WAN) solution. Based on experiences made when using ISDN to build an internet-based LAN/WAN infrastructure in an educational environment, a terrestrial communication structure easily applicable to developing countries is proposed. Integration of directional radio systems and satellite links like very small aperture terminals (VSAT) needed to span large distances without terrestrial infrastructure are discussed.

Virtual LAN-WAN for Workgroup Multimedia Application

Workgroup multimedia applications such as videoconference, teleteaching or CSCW demand multipoint service from Telecommunication Networks. This is not just a broadcast service but it is a service where N sites transmit traffic to N sites. This service requires that the network support a large number of workgroups with few (5-20) participants together with low delay, low delay jitter, high throu...

Data transmission over Inmarsat in TCP/IP environment

The International Maritime Satellite (Inmarsat) communication service can be used to provide a wide area network (WAN) connection for a local area network (LAN) to the home LAN from almost anywhere on the earth. The communication link of the WAN connection is achieved through the satellite network of Inmarsat and a land-earth digital telephone network, such as Integrated Services Digital Networ...

A Fairness Analysis of LAN/WAN Protocol Relays

Functional standardization activities in ISO and in regional workshops are currently addressing network layer relays for the interconnection of several types of subnetworks. Relay systems are critical systems in the overall performance of the network because they are the points where network congestion can be build up or avoided. Particularly, when the interconnected subnetworks have very dissi...

An ATM WAN/LAN Gateway Architecture

This paper describes a gigabit LAN/WAN gateway being developed for the MAGIC gigabit testbed. The gateway interfaces a gigabit LAN developed by DEC Systems Research Center and the MAGIC SONET/ATM wide area network. The UNI provides 622 Mb/s throughput between the LAN and WAN environments, and supports either a single OC-12c or four OC-3c tributaries. The architecture will initially support IP r...

Resource Management and Access Control in ISDN Remote Access Environments

The integrated services digital network (ISDN) is one of the most promoted telecommunication services of the 1990’s. As being the natural evolutionary path of the public switched telephone network (PSTN), ISDN has reached a high acceptance in many countries. Even though broadband networks such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) promise to offer transmission rates in the multi-megabit area, ISD...
